Tacoma Japantown

Place-Based Stories of Historic Japantown in Tacoma, Washington

From the 1880s through the early 1940s, Japanese immigrants and their descendants created a dense, vibrant neighborhood (Nihonmachi, or Japantown) in Tacoma’s downtown core. This project is dedicated to keeping the history of that neighborhood (and other Tacoma Japanese American settlements) alive, using historic photos and maps from researchers, libraries, museums, and descendants of those Japanese immigrants.
